M ercedes-Benz 190E, which debuted in 1982, has spread around the world with a huge circulation. Customers have succeeded in a great design, attractive price and a very thoughtful and progressive technical " beginning " . But there's not enough who knows that a very small part of 190E has truly been a massacre. They were given by a common but very important number - 16.
And it started in the far '70s when Mercedes-Benz was quite successful in the Ralli. With the 190th model in Stuttgart, they decided to continue their race traditions and applied to a famous company called Cosworth.
The English helped Germans with a motor, 2, 3-litre 16-clan four in the race specification, gave the fine 320 horsebacks.
The first of the fabulous family of the 190s with the motor of Cosworth was 2.3-16, debutted in 1983. Outside, a rather modest car had completely undisturbed characteristics and could scare many sportsmen of that era.
Alas, all the hopes of Mercedes-Benz in the Rallium Championship have been turned down, and they have no chances against the Audi Quattro numerals. But the Germans didn't put their hands down and turned their eyes on the German DTM. However, according to the competition rules, the car had to have a road version.
It was not a long wait: the debut of serial Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 was held in a car park in Frankfurt in September 1983. Cosworth has also worked seriously on a " civilian " motor, which has received a new head of the unit that was produced at the British firm. The engine was very good and developed 185 horsepower and 235 Nm torques, which allowed the 190th to be lifted only in 7, 5 seconds. The maximum speed also made respect - 230 km/h.
But not only did the engine have a " loaded " version. The control was more " sharp " , the fuel tank increased from 55 to 70 litres, and the standard equipment included a high friction differential. The SLS system (Self-Leveling Suspension) has been introduced, which has maintained a continuous road illumination under the rear axle, as well as a higher-tight depreciators from the front. In the interior, the Recaro sporting seats (not only in front but in the rear) and three additional instruments were thrown into the eye.
